At Lakeview Rest Homes, it is our aim to engage residents (where they would like to be engaged) in meaningful activity. This activity may stimulate the mind or body or even the creativeness of the resident.
Activities may be done in group format or alternatively on a one-to-one basis, depending on the individual's assessed need.
Some activities have a learning outcome, for example arts and crafts or quizzes. Others may be light-hearted, for example bingo, connect 4 or karaoke. Some activities will allow the care teams at our homes to learn more about our residents, for example the memory game. Whatever the activity and its desired effect, we will aim to make them all fun!
Where at all possible, we will attempt to help our residents maintain links with the community and to forge new ones. An example of this is the church. If a resident wishes to visit the church, we will try to assist them. However, if a resident is unable to attend church, but has always attended church, we will try to arrange for a church person (of the correct denomination) to visit, thus maintaining that resident's links.
Activities should empower the residents and allow them a sense of purpose. Think of it in these terms:
a) A resident perhaps once had a garden that they tended and took care of. This is now their home and their garden. We should allow them the opportunity and assistance to undertake their own gardening project here if possible.
b) In any walk of life, people generally have the responsibility of taking care of their own house. Many of our residents were probably once proud housekeepers. Why should this change if they want to continue to take some responsibility? We should facilitate their wishes. By this, we consider what a person may be capable of achieving safely, and work out how we can help them. For example, dusting their rooms, making their own bed etc.
These are just a couple of examples of the many opportunities.
Our new mini-bus will allow us to continue with our
trips out to places such as Wrea Green, Penny Farm and Fleetwood boating lake etc. Any suggestions will be given serious consideration.
Consideration and assistance will be given to residents whom suffer difficulties that may not usually allow them to take part in activities e.g. poor eyesight, hearing etc. There are ways reducing the effects these ailments can have on your enjoyment e.g. over-sized playing cards, staff to help during games of bingo, over-sized connect 4 etc.
Meetings will be held on a monthly basis, allowing residents the opportunity to have a say in how they live their lives and what activities they would like more of - or less of etc. Parties should be an inclusive activity and all help would be welcomed, whether that be from residents, families or friends.

All activities will advertised near the dining room area and recorded in our file. This year, guidance has also been sought from NAPA and the Alzheimer's Association. At Lakeview Rest Homes, we hope to achieve a holistic approach to care and care for the mind, body and spirit.
